“Drawings by Pauline” explores the link between humans and nature: intertwined, twisting and turning, trying to run away from each other and, ultimately, failing. Organic shapes morph as if animated, representing a constant continuation of growth.
The process for each piece begins with an initial gestural movement leading to an array of grotesque shapes inspired by flora, rocks, jungles, and human organs. In the color drawings are shades of the human flesh and fleshy leaves, from browns and pastel pinks to chlorophyll green. In the graphite drawings are deep greys with sharp edges, a reflection of the hard and soft edges of rocks.
There are allusions to veins and viscera, of decay and collapse, and vessels more rotted than the contents they carry. Each drawing holds an experimental object shown as objects exist in life, enduring through change.
